Public Holidays

Arransia has eleven official public holidays, as follows:

  • 1 Jan – New Year’s Day
  • 2 Jan – Second New Year Day
  • Shrove Tuesday (variable between February 3 and March 9)
  • Good Friday (variable between March 20 and April 23)
  • 14 May – Ugglesby Head Day
  • 24 June – Midsummer Day
  • 30 July – Barleycorn Day
  • 6 September – Thanksgiving Day
  • 1 November – All Saints’ Day
  • 25 December – Christmas Day
  • 26 December – St Stephen’s Day

Holidays are taken on the day on which they fall. If they fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the holiday is taken on the preceding Friday. If a double holiday falls on a weekend, the extra day is taken to allow a four-day holiday from Friday to Monday.

If a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many workers will take the opportunity to have a long weekend.

As the list shows, Arransia has about a holiday a month throughout the summer.

Ugglesby Head Day commemorates Admiral John Brodie's famous victory over the Brunswickian fleet in 1651, which can be regarded as Arransia's Trafalgar.

Barleycorn Day celebrates what is effectively Arransia's national crop and the staple ingredient of beer and whisky. It is fairly obvious how this holiday is celebrated.

Thanksgiving Day is basically a harvest festival, and traditionally is often the occasion for the King to make an address to the nation - as, invariably, is Christmas Day.

Easter is variable in Catholic Arransia, but fixed in secular Brunswick, which causes some problems.

Employment law in Arransia requires that all workers be given a minimum of 20 days' holiday, plus all 11 public holidays. In practice, most good employers allow 25 days' holiday.
